Reiger Park residents run out of patience over claims of no housing delivery

There is a strong police presence in Reiger Park, Boksburg, after residents took to the streets to protest their unhappiness over waiting for over two decades for adequate housing allocation.

Joining Stephen Grootes live from Reiger Park, EWN's Mia Lindeque says residents insist foreign nationals and people from other provinces are benefiting from governments housing projects, while neglecting the coloured community.

About twenty people stay in someone's backyard.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police are on high alert and it is reported they shot rubber bullets to disperse an angry group of protesters earlier, sparking further tensions.

An appeal to residents to stay calm has been put forward by the Gauteng Human Settlements Department.

The department says it will investigate the claim and already established an investigations unit that looks into such allegations and will take action where necessary.

Foreigners do not qualify for our subsidies.

Keith Khoza – spokesperson for MEC for Housing, Paul Mashatile

Khoza said one of the major challenges facing the department is the reselling of RDP homes.
