A Plumstead family responsible for a job advertisement requesting a ‘nice smelling domestic worker’ willing to earn less than the minimum wage required to work seven days a week, has defended the advert.
In the post advertised on Gumtree on Tuesday, Mrs Allie requests a female domestic worker with ‘no illness’, stating that she must be “clean and smell good, and bath and change every day (and twice a day if necessary)”.
She also requests that the candidate have a valid passport which she [Mrs Allie] will withhold in the period of employment.
The post offers R2 000, although the legal pay for a domestic worker is at least R3 402 if the worker worked nine hours a day, seven days a week.
Speaking to News 24, a man identified as Mrs Allies husband, Abubkar Allie, says that he sees nothing wrong with the advert, and a starting salary of R2 000 which would increase to R2 500.
Allie is reported saying that they have had people working for less as they simply cannot afford it. He also told News24 the request for a valid passport is because the family had previously been robbed.
Social media users have slammed the family describing this as modern day slavery.

The position is believed to be filled and the post has since been removed from Gumtree.
