Is it normal to have a curved penis? Dr Shingai explains

Peyronie’s disease is a disorder of the penis characterised by focal scarring and penile curvature.

Men who develop this disorder notice a bent penis during erections. The penis curve can develop very gradually.

Urologist Dr Shingai Mutambirwa explains that there are multiple theories behind the cause of Peyronie’s disease.

Dr Shingai advises that size is not a factor when is comes to this disorder.

He adds that, in general, the male penis is hardly ever straight.

No man's penis is completely straight anyways. Some bend to the left, others to the right and some of them up.

Dr Shingai says that penile curvature should become cause for concern if it interferes with a man's ability to have penetrative sex.

The most important thing about the bend is if you are able to have penetrative sex without any difficulty.

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, urologist and sexual health expert

He says the curvature may cause pain in the penis, which can be treated over a period of three to six months.

There are things we can use to try help straighten the penis.

If the pain does not subside or the penis curve doesn't settle, then experts may resort to alternative medical therapies to straighten it out, such as steroids, vitamin E, selenium, Verapamil and Clostridium Histolyticum.

In addition to the injectable treatments, Dr Shingai explains that there are manual ways to straighten the penis using technologies, external devices or surgery - but these may have long-term side-effects.

He maintains, however, that Peyronie’s disease is not life threatening.

It's very treatable, it's not a cancer. It's not dangerous.
