Cycle Tour organisers to assess financial implications of race cancellation

Cape Town Cycle Tour Race Director and CEO, David Bellairs says this was the first time they had to cancel the race in the 40 years of the event's existence.

The organising team had to make a tough decision on Sunday after gale force winds were making it difficult for cyclists to race.

We set four groups off, and those were professional riders, and it immediately became clear that it was not going to be possible to get the rest of the field out.

Bellairs says it was not an easy decision to make but it was not done in isolation. They worked closely with the city's disaster management team, SAPS and EMS. The safety of the cyclist was their priority.

We did everything we possibly could but sadly the Cape Doctor had other plans.

The team is meeting today in the afternoon to assess the financial implication that comes with the cancellation of the race, says Bellairs.

It is a charitable trust so the outcome may mean less funds to the charities supported.

The vast majority of cyclists understood the decision he said.

All the hospitality food and beverages was moved to the fire-stricken area of Imizamo Yethu.
