Former MasterChef contestant's eatery reinvents traditional African food

Restauranteur Abigail Mbalo-Mokoena says reinventing the South African traditional food offering has always been her dream.

Mbalo-Mokoena recently opened a restaurant in Khayelitsha called 4roomed eKasi Culture that serves South African traditional food.

She was one of the top 12 contestants in the local edition of MasterChef in 2014.

Speaking to Pippa Hudson, Mbalo-Mokoena says she started off serving her traditional food in a food truck parking next to a Chisanyama with the aim of complementing their menu.

I wanted to start developing the economy of the township which stems from an observation that most young professionals are moving away from the townships to the suburbs, leaving the economy of the township deprived...

We want to encourage people to grow their own food because it's an inexpensive way of making your own food and also nutritious.
