The South African Police Service (Saps) management says a research team has been set up to better understand what demilitarising the police will involve.
Saps and Police Minister Nathi Nhleko briefed Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police on the implementation of the Farlam Commission recommendations on Wednesday.
Members of Parliament wanted to know why the Farlam Inquiry recommendation to professionalise and demilitarise the police is taking so long to implement.
EWN's Gaye Davis reports that the research team will be made up of experts from within Saps ranks and as well as external experts.
They are going to be thrashing out what demilitarisation means.— Gaye Davis, Parliamentary correspondent for EWN
Nhleko told the committee that demilitarisation is not necessarily the removal of ranks.
Once the research is concluded, it will go before the minister and Cabinet, Davis explains.
