Mthethwa's vicious attack on sex worker deserves the maximum sentence - Sweat

The Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) director, Sally Shackleton, expressed relief at the murder conviction against international artist and photographer, Zwelethu Mthethwa. Shackleton described it as a "long and stressful" trial.

On Thursday, the Western Cape High Court found Mthethwa guilty of killing sex worker, Nokuphila Kumalo, in Woodstock in April 2013.

CCTV footage was described in court as the "silent witness" in the trial, showing Mthetwa's arriving in his Porsche. He inflicted deadly blows on Khumalo, and stomped on her so hard it almost ruptured her liver.

We were extremely happy and relieved.

Sally Shackleton, Sweat director

It's become very meaningful for sex workers who report violence against themselves, and very often violence against them is ignored.

Sally Shackleton, Sweat director

We are hoping for maximum. We feel he was very purposeful in his attack on this young this woman.

Sally Shackleton, Sweat director

Sweat has been involved right from the beginning, even protesting against the exhibition of his work.
