Zille did not mean to defend colonialism - spokesperson

Athol Trollip, DA Federal Chairperson says no charges have been officially laid internally or outside of the DA with regards to a tweet which caused a public uproar by Western Cape Premier,Helen Zille, on Thursday.

Zille took to Twitter to let everyone know that not everything about colonialism was bad.

Trollip says he acknowledges that the Zille's tweets have caused a stir and referenced that other party members who did the same had to to face disciplinary.

Colonialism was a phenomenon in the world at a certain time. It came with a lot of prejudice, oppression and a lot of exploitation. It has left a bitter taste in many people's mouths... one needs to be sensitive about them...

Athol Trollip, DA Federal Chairperson

The art of politics in not to make mistakes, the art of politics is to think before you open your mouth, before you tweet and to be sensitive at all times and remember that we are a very diverse society and need to be respectful of each other.

Athol Trollip, DA Federal Chairperson

Spokesperson to Premier Helen Zille, Michael Mpofu says Zille has unreservedly apologised for her tweets and that she did not mean to defend colonialism.

Mpofu says Zille is willing to comply with whatever processes that have been put in place with regards to her tweets.

There is something about social media that robs us of the element of context and that is our biggest challenge at this stage as to how we could have painted a better picture because there is no way the province supports colonialism.

Michael Mpofu, spokesperson to Premier Helen Zille
