The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service is once more appealing to the public to donate blood.
The organisation says the province's group B blood supply is under severe pressure and has reached a level of a mere four day stock.
While donors from all blood groups are important, the organisation insists there is a particular need for donors with blood types O and B to donate regularly as these are more vulnerable to shortfalls.
Spokesperson Irene van Schalkwyk says they are not in crisis mode but a supply can help prevent further shortages.
When our collection is under pressure it happens for a number of reasons, usually during school holidays, long weekends or also during winter times when our donors typically suffer from colds and flu's then we experience those shortages.— Irene van Schalkwyk, Spokesperson for the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service
