Sars ready to cooperate with investigation into how it works

The Tax Ombud, Judge Bernard Ngoepe, requested Finance Minister to approve an investigation into the issue of tax refund delays at South African Revenue Services (Sars).

Sars spokesperson Sandile Memela says it is ready to fully comply with the investigation.

Memela says Radio 702 has played a key role in highlighting complaints about delays in tax refund payments. He adds that Sars has worked with people that have come forward with their concerns.

Memela adds that Sars is confident in the strength and robustness of the organisations systems.

When it comes to personal income tax, they deal with an average of 260 000 tax payers a month, 93% of these are paid within 72 hours.

Which tells you that It's less than 7% individual tax payers who are affected by delays.

Sandile Memela

Memela says the delays are often as a result of audits pinned on those with unverifiable banking details or those that had previously failed to pay their taxes.
