Afrikaans-speaking student res adamant "not exclusive"

De Goede Hoop Koshuis is a private residence near the University of Pretoria which accommodates only Afrikaans-speaking students.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator, says the facility is meant to protect Afrikaans students who are sometimes accused of being racist by other students.

De Goede Hoop Koshuis caters for Afrikaans and Christian students. It is a place where they can feel safe and passionate about their language, not be victimised or mocked, where they can feel at home.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator

She says Afrikaans speaking students have been victimised on campuses through #AfrikaansMustFall and other movements and accused of being racist.

Sonntag says Afrikaans is no longer be spoken in other residences.

It is a constitutional right to get education in all 11 official languages but at UP it is only in English, so De Goede Hoop Koshuis is the only facility that has Afrikaans as the official language.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator

Afrikaans is an official language and we are within the constitution and we are promoting and developing the language.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator

She insists they are not excluding anybody.

We are inclusive. we don't exclude anyone. Anybody is welcome at our hostel so it can't be geluik (compared) to apartheid, not at all.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator

If the finger should be pointed, it should be pointed at Tuks res direction. They are the exclusive one, excluding all other languages.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator

She insists the hostel is not only for white people but rather for Afrikaans Christian students.

If you want to put a racist sticker on it that is not good.

Janli Sonntag, De Goede Hoop Koshuis coordinator

She admits there are currently no black students in the residence, but says they have received applications from people 'of different cultures' and insists 'everybody's welcome' if they 'meet the requirements'.
