[LISTEN] Caller shares traumatic rape ordeal in light of recent taxi attacks

As public outcry continues in response to several reports of rape in Johannesburg, a woman has shared her own story.

In 1991 Carol was kidnapped at gunpoint by a builder near her home in Alberton.

Speaking to Eusebius McKaiser she says the man raped her multiple times and strangled her until she lost consciousness.

Seven years later three men broke into her house, raped and beat her, leaving her for dead.

The first man I have to say was a white man, the other black men.

Carol, 702 caller

I have been hearing this and it has been rather traumatic for me because I do try and handle it in the best way possible and then when these stories come out….

Carol, 702 caller

I look at it that today is today, and if I am having a particularly not nice day, I always keep telling myself that there is a new dawn.

Carol, 702 caller

All together I do struggle. I just keep smiling. It’s a choice of smiling or crying but smiling is a better option.

Carol, 702 caller

Several Joburg women have now come forward with information on a string of sexual assaults by taxi drivers and police are searching for a white Quantum minibus taxi and a group of suspects.
