Defiant Andile Lungisa is likely buoyed by Zuma's backing - analyst

Newly-elected ANC Nelson Mandela Bay chairperson Andile Lungisa has been asked to step down or face disciplinary action.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) served Lungisa with a letter on Tuesday, calling on him to resign by Thursday.

ANC leadership pointed out that the party’s constitution prohibits him from contesting elections in a lower structure because of the position he holds as a PEC member.

Lungisa has refused to step down and political analyst Mcebisi Ndletyana suspects he is supported by someone within the senior ranks of the ANC, likely President Jacob Zuma.

Someone must have persuaded him to stay, and the likelihood is that it was the President.

He explains that Lungisa had initially withdrew his candidacy on March 11 but made an about-turn following Zuma's arrival and praise.

Ndletyana advises that the party has in the past contradicted itself and says the ANC doesn't always follow its own constitution.

This case is not new. There are several precedents... You have clear cases of violation of the (ANC) constitution, mainly because people do not want to act.
