Time spent with your children could improve their academic perfomance

The Journal of Marriage and Family published a study questioning time mothers spent with their children; whether it matters. The researchers wanted to test the common belief that kids’ time with moms is “unique and irreplaceable.” In addition they also looked at the amounts of time kids spent with dads and with both parents.

The findings of the study were that time interacting with both parents seemed to have more of an impact than time with either parent alone, particularly for adolescents. For these older kids, parent time was linked to fewer behavioural problems, less substance abuse, and other benefits.

702/CapeTalk presenter Redi Tlhabi asked listeners to share their experiences of their parents and experiences as parents themselves.

Fezel in Elderado Park - mostly where you find children being involved in crime and substance abuse it’s in the instances where parents are no longer together.

Shameen in Johannesburg left his job to spend more time with his children. He says his children excel academically as a result of spending time with both parents. Shameen and his wife do not watch TV in evenings; it is time to spend together as a family. Time spent with children is beneficial for them, he says.

Mmamathaba in Mafikeng was raised by both parents and had six siblings. Although they saw their father only on weekends because of work commitments he made sure they all convened fortnightly and spent time as a family and that brought their family together.

Four advantages for parents spending time with their children
