A child goes missing every five hours in South Africa - Missing Children SA

Missing Children South Africa's national case officer Bianca van Aswegen spoke to CapeTalk's Koketso Sachane about the work done around missing children.

She says while the number of children that go missing in South Africa is quite high, the recovery rate of children sits at 78%.

Van Aswegen says 229 cases were reported in their adult category and of those only 124 were found.

We had quite a few cases reported to us regarding muti murders and I think we should have that out there and have the public know what it is all about.

Van Aswegen says muti murders are a contributing factor to children that are reported missing. She also says children with albinism and disabilities are the most vulnerable.

We do work closely with South African Police Service.

Van Aswegen explains that they work quite closely with the police and stresses that there is no waiting period to report a missing person.

She urges the public to also contact Missing Children South Africa once a case has been opened with the police so that they can also assist with attempting to find the missing person.
