Denis Goldberg and Aaron Motsoaledi bid farewell to Kathrada

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation confirmed the death of South Africa's struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada in the early hours of Tuesday.

Kathrada's health deteriorated after he underwent minor surgery to remove a blood clot on the brain. He was 87-years-old.

Dr Denis Goldberg says Kathrada was strong and disciplined till the end. Goldberg was tried alongside Ahmed Kathrada, and others during the Rivonia Trial.

He was frail but his voice strong and principled. I feel a terrible sense of loss.

My sympathy to the people who worked very closely with him in his foundation and I wish for them to be strong in upholding everything he stood for.

Motsoaledi says Kathrada's death is a loss not only to South Africans but to the whole world.
