Mapaila confirms Zuma told SACP of plans to axe Gordhan

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has confirmed that President Jacob Zuma informed leaders about his plan to reshuffle Cabinet and fire Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas.

SACP second deputy general secretary, Solly Mapaila, says they told the President that they object the plan.

Mapaila says Zuma told the SACP that the intelligence report showing Gordhan's alleged close relationship with "white monopoly capital" is the reason why he ordered him to cancel the investment roadshow in London.

The SACP has not ruled having their members resign from Cabinet. They have about five ministers and two deputies that are SACP members, and we are hearing from the SACP that perhaps they will be responding to Cabinet reshuffle or the replacement of the Finance Minister and his deputy could be getting their members out of Parliament.

They also say they want serious action to be taken against President Jacob Zuma if continues with this reshuffle.

Mapaila says Gordhan has been doing a good job "protecting our national purse".

He says the reasons provided by the President to have him replaced are not related to good governance.

We believe if they have done something wrong, they should have been asked to come and account. In this case, it was too quick to try and remove them.

Solly Mapaila, SACP second deputy general secretary

There are other departments we have complained about such as social development... and there was no decisive action taken. We feel that there is much more to this than the actual reasons that were raised.
