Cabinet reshuffle imminent, Zuma concludes meeting with ANC top six

JOHANNESBURG - The Presidency is expected to hold a press conference shortly - with a cabinet reshuffle expected to be announced.

Nine ministers and six deputies have reportedly been summoned by President Jacob Zuma after he met with the rest of the ANC’s top six leadership on Thursday evening.

The officials - ANC deputy Cyril Ramaphosa‚ chairperson Baleka Mbete‚ Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe‚ Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte and Treasurer-General Zweli Mkhize - were called to a meeting at short notice to the presidential home, Mahlamba Ndlopfu, at 18:30.

Speculation is now rife that at least nine ministers and six deputies have reportedly been summoned by president Jacob Zuma and will be affected by this reshuffle.

This comes amid mounting speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle that is largely expected to see Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas sacked.

The meeting follows the president's instruction to Gordhan and his deputy to return home from an investor roadshow abroad this week.

Eyewitness News has so far not been able to independently verify reports of ministers being summoned by the president.

Meanwhile, the rand weakened around three percent to the dollar between 6pm and 10pm, as speculation continued to grow.

At 6pm, it was trading at R12.81 before weakening to R13.20 at 10:30pm.
