DA opposes newly elected Cabinet

Following the news of a mass Cabinet reshuffle, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is responding by launching an urgent interdict to stop the swearing of new ministers.

The matter is being presented in the Western Cape High Court.

Law Professor and political commentator, Richard Calland says it may be difficult for the DA to succeed with their application.

It's widely accepted that a President has a large amount of discretion, a large amount of power available to him when making presidential appointments to Cabinet.

Richard Calland, Law Professor and political commentator

I don't know exactly what the DA is going to argue.

Calland says the Speaker of Parliament will now also be under pressure as a motion to table a vote of no confidence in parliament is on the cards.
