Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete had to cut short her trip to Bangladesh to address opposition parties call for a motion of no confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma.
Mbete said she will consider requests for a parliamentary vote on a motion of no confidence in President Zuma.
Dr Cathy Powell, senior lecturer in public law at the University of Cape Town says Mbete is required to consult the director of government business in Parliament, Cyril Ramaphosa and the Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu.
They should simply be deciding when the debate gets held and how it gets fitted into the programme.— Dr Cathy Powell, Senior lecturer in public law at the University of Cape Town
Is it possible for MPs to vote through a secret ballot?
There is no provision made for a secret ballot for that procedure or any other procedure that is not required by the Constitution to be secret. So the rules didn't change to allow for that.— Dr Cathy Powell, Senior lecturer in public law at the University of Cape Town
