Cosatu: Zuma the source of a polarised SA

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says President Jacob Zuma left the trade union federation with no choice but to declare publicly that he must step down.

Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla says while Cosatu prefers to engage privately with ANC leadership before making public pronouncements, Cosatu has been unable to reach Zuma for some time.

We've been struggling to pin down the President.

When he [Zuma] reshuffled this time around, he didn't even bother to consult us.

It no longer made sense for us to censor ourselves.

Pamla says the lack of consultation prior to Zuma's cabinet reshuffle has left the alliance partner 'angered'.

In addition, he claims Cosatu has been aggrieved by Zuma's meddling, which has been an ongoing concern.

The manner in which the President has been interfering or intervening on matters [including] the National Treasury has always been our problem.

Over the last two years we have had four finance ministers, that's not the kind of stability we need.

At an ANC level, there is no cohesiveness; at an alliance level there is no cohesiveness; at a government level, there is no cohesiveness.

The President is the one individual who need to step aside.

Last week, the South African Communist Party (SACP) said Zuma's actions have plunged South Africa into deep crisis.

Meanwhile, Zuma wants a meeting with Cosatu after its public calls for him to step down.
