Rhino horn trade soon to be legal in SA

This means it is now legal to buy and sell rhino horn in South Africa.

You and I can enter into a treaty, whereby as a willing buyer you can buy whatever quantity of rhino horn. You then go to the department of environmental affairs and apply for possession permit and be the proud owner of the rhino horn - like a property owner.

Pelham Jones, Private Rhino Owners Association, says they spend over R2 billion to protect the rhinos but the poaching is not stopping.

702/CapeTalk's Stephen Grootes asked Jones the reason he decided to trade in rhino horn.

We had no solution but to look at plan b as an out of the box solution to see if we can regulate transparent trade to meet end user demand.

If we are able to trade rhino horn, that revenue comes back to mitigate the incredibly high-security management expenses and with time rhino horn can get to the end user market and remove pressure on the wild population.
