Does President Jacob Zuma have nine lives?

Attempts to get President Jacob Zuma to vacate office are seemingly gloomy.

Last week, however, there was some glimmer of hope when some of the African National Congress (ANC) publicly questioned and criticised President Zuma's cabinet reshuffle but later backtracked on their statements.

Veteran journalist and political analyst, Karima Brown says the ANC's The National Executive Committee (NEC) is the same body that recalled former president Thabo Mbeki and therefore do hold the power to recall President Zuma.

I think one of the most important drivers of what will be going through the minds of some of the NEC members will be the ability of the organisation to win elections in 2019 considering that last year they lost three major metros.

Karima Brown, Veteran journalist and political analyst

That is one of the key drivers of how the ANC will have to think about whether or not it can afford to continue with the presidency of Jacob Zuma.

The second driver is the question of patronage. I was listening to Jeremy Cronin, outlining the extent to which state capture embedded in the African National Congress and in the state. And that is a key reason why Jacob Zuma remains in power.

Brown says personal loyalties within the NEC is another reason Zuma is able to remain in office.
