Thousands of South Africans have marched today calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down from the Presidency.
Political analyst David Maimela says that large scale protests have the ability to challenge the governing party.
To the extent that the protest march can attract large scale numbers, then it presents a challenge to the ANC and President.— David Maimela, Researcher at the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection
He says a combination of illegitimate leadership and discontent among the majority of a country can lead to the stepping down of a sitting president.
It should be the majority of citizens that are against a particular leadership.. we've not seen that kind of thing.— David Maimela, Researcher at the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection
Maimela says Friday's anti-Zuma protests did not see complete shutdowns across the country's major cities.
He adds that successful mass civic action needs to be protracted over a long period of time.
Maimela reelected effect of mass civic action against the President Zuma and what constitutes illegitimate leadership, making comparisons from across the Continent.
