SJC pickets WC Police HQ to protest R100 million Muizenberg cop station upgrade

The Social Justice Coalition (SJC) activists plan to picket outside the police's provincial headquarters in Green Point on Tuesday to oppose a decision by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to upgrade a police station in Muizenberg worth R100 million.

Senior Researcher at the Social Justice coalition, Dalli Weyers, says the Muizenberg upgrade doesn't make sense when there are crime-ridden communities in need of policing. Read: R100m for Muizenberg cop station shows SAPS serves white communities

The building of a R100 million police station in Muizenberg for us underscores the way in which Saps irrationally and discriminatory allocate its resources.

Dalli Weyers, Senior Researcher at the Social Justice coalition

Weyers says they believe there are police stations that should be prioritised, such as a police station in Nyanga - dubbed South Africa's murder capital.

The upgrades on the Muizenberg police station which was built in the 1900s were proposed five years ago, says Weyer.

There are already police stations that have clear need that has been articulated, that could be addressed with that R100 million...

Dalli Weyers, Senior Researcher at the Social Justice coalition

I want to make it clear that I am a resident of Muizenberg but I don't honestly believe that Muizenberg requires a new police station. What South Africa needs is for police to be where crime happens.

Dalli Weyers, Senior Researcher at the Social Justice coalition

Weyers says South Africans should stand together and advocate for communities who honestly need those resources in order to be safe.

He says he hopes with the planned picket they can get Saps to change its mind about allocation of resources.
