MPs should be protected from intimidation - Holomisa

National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete will respond on Tuesday to the Constitutional Court application by the leader of the United Democratic Movement, Bantu Holomisa.

Holomisa is asking that Members of Parliament be allowed to vote through a secret ballot during motion of no confidence motion in President Jacob Zuma.

Speaking to CapeTalk/702's Stephen Grootes, Holomisa says Members of Parliament should be protected against intimidation by ANC members, which is why UDM is requesting that voting be done through a secret ballot.

We are saying why did the ANC go public and intimidate members of Parliament?

Holomisa says some members of the tripartite alliance and other members of the ANC have come forward calling for Zuma to go. This would then provide them with a facility in which they can protect themselves if they chose to vote against Zuma.

Former President Thabo Mbeki has also released a statement asking Members of Parliament to vote in the best interest of the country. Holomisa says he believes some MPs will listen to Mbeki and do the right thing.

Holomisa commented on a statement made by President Zuma that marches that were held on Friday showed that racism was still present in our society.

That's a careless statement coming from the head of state ... when these guys are in a tight corner they always want to play the race card.
