Democratic Alliance's Ekurhuleni council leader Ghaleb Cachalia says comments made by Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina at the Chris Hani Memorial Lecture on Monday are tantamount to intimidation and incitement.
On Tuesday, Cachallia laid criminal charges against the mayor.
Referring to offensive posters by a group of demonstrators at Friday's protests against President Jacob Zuma, Masina has been quoted as saying: "I want to say to our white counterparts in South Africa, they must be very very careful. [They need to] understand that the issue of nation building and social cohesion requires all of us, not these insults that you get from social media and you get called everything else...that time has come to an end....our children and your children, they don't see what you are seeing in us, we are not monkeys, we are people,"
He also said that things are going to get ‘very very rough’.
Cachalia has lodged a complaint with Ekhuruleni’s ethics and integrity committee.
It is utterly irresponsible in our democratic dispensation to do so. He must be brought to book for what he says now and the consequences of his words in terms of action must go forward.— Ghaleb Cachalia, DA’s Ekurhuleni council leader
We have laid charges with the police against him, that will go through due process of law.— Ghaleb Cachalia, DA’s Ekurhuleni council leader
