Dismissed Ntlemeza should not have been appointed, argues Freedom Under Law

Civil society group Freedom Under Law maintains that fired Hawks boss Berning Ntlemeza should never have been appointed in the first place.

The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that Ntlemeza must step down from the position of head of the Hawks immediately.

Freedom Under Law's Nicole Fritz says it was not for former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko to dismiss the 2015 court findings that Ntlemeza was dishonest and lacked integrity.

The courts of this land had held him to be incontrovertibly dishonest and he was appointed to his position not withstanding that finding.

In December last year, Freedom Under Law and the Helen Suzman Foundation applied for Ntlemeza’s permanent appointment to be reviewed.

The civil society groups argued that the position of National Head of the Hawks required a person of integrity and honesty.
