What you need to know about your new acting Hawks head

Yolisa Matakata will temporarily replace Berning Ntlemeza as head of the Hawks, following an announcement by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula on Thursday.

Ntlemeza was appointed to the top post by then minister Nkosinathi Nhleko, despite a High Court ruling which found he had lied under oath and lacked integrity.

The court ruled this week that Ntlemeza should vacate the post with immediate effect.

While it’s understood Ntlemeza intends petitioning the supreme court of appeal directly, Mbalula says he will initiate a process to appoint a permanent head by the end of the year.

The minister says the case challenging the appointment of Ntlemeza as head of the Hawks should never have been pursued because it was clearly unwinnable.
