The City of Cape Town plans to erect the statue along with an exhibition at City Hall.

A public participation process by the City of Cape Town is set to get underway in a proposal to commemorate former president Nelson Mandela ‘s life with a R3.5 million statue and exhibition.

Tourism MEC Alan Winde explains how the idea was sparked by a conversation with The United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s Taleb Rifai.

When he was here, I asked him before he left what did he think of South Africa and what would he do differently if he were in my shoes.

Alan Winde, MEC for Economic Opportunities

He said there are two things that your country has got that is absolutely unique and not in any other space in the world, the one is the Madiba legacy and the cradle of humankind

Alan Winde, MEC for Economic Opportunities

We engaged in a discussion on how to build a sort of tourism Madiba legacy route and we have got lots of offering here. We have the iconic destination of Robben Island and the history linked to it, Madiba’s house which is still intact as it was in his time before his release……We are in the process of utilising that house as part of a legacy route, or you can visit and listen to stories about Madiba.

Alan Winde, MEC for Economic Opportunities

What do we do about telling the story specifically about that day that he made the speech after his release…

Alan Winde, MEC for Economic Opportunities

And so we though the best way would be to have a statue of Madiba standing on the balcony.
