[LISTEN] Caller says "Jacob Zuma has us by the balls"

A frustrated caller from Johannesburg, Busi, says South Africans are so quick to move on from one subject to the other and care less about what's happening.

Calling into the Eusebius McKaiser show, she insists that President Jacob Zuma has citizens "by the balls" and that Hlaudi Motsoeneng's media briefing has distracted people from real issues surrounding the recent credit ratings downgrade.

Not long ago I was buying sugar at R20 something, now I am buying it at R30. I am going to be paying more for the student loan that I have taken for my daughter. Its like nobody cares about that!

Busi, 702 caller

I think Jacob Zuma has got us by the balls in South Africa and we are not focused on the main issue. He knows, South Africans talk and call radio stations, couple of minutes we will be over it before we know it. Right now we are focusing on Hlaudi.

Busi, 702 caller

Eusebius McKaiser disagrees.

When you say we just move one, I think that's being glib...You have deep contestation going on in the country, the energy and the urgency... I want to be deeply empathetic too in how you are describing the practical effects that all the shenanigans have in your life....

Eusebius McKaiser, 702 anchor

There is an energy in civil society in this country right now last seen in the 1980's.... It's easy to say things that make you feel that you are above the fray when you say we must focus on the real issues.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702 anchor

Why do we talk ourselves up into a frenzy where we are going to get heart attack, no one has forgotten, how can you forget the looting that is going on?... Just because we laugh for ten minutes doesn't mean we have forgotten.
