The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has called for an urgent parliamentary debate on the implications of a ruling by the Western Cape High Court allowing the private use of marijuana.

On Wednesday ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe said Parliament needs to express its view on the matter before it reaches the Constitutional Court.

He says it is irresponsible for people to suggest that dagga should be de-criminalised.

Nyaope is among the leading problems in society. When you look at the ingredients of nyaope, dagga is among them. We cannot allow a situation where many of our young people drop out of school and you see the potential of these young boys and girls destroyed because of drugs that include dagga,

Kenneth Meshoe, ACDP leader

Asked if the same sentiment should not be held toward substances like alcohol and that it be made illegal, Meshoe listed the medical implications associated with the plant.

There are doctors who say it impairs people's mental abilities.....the dangers of drugs such as nyaope are not comparable to alcohol. While alcohol abuse has devastated homes, nyaope is worse. We have noticed over the years that children have stolen everything their parents have owned to feed this addiction.

Kenneth Meshoe, ACDP leader

He says medical experts need to be consulted.

Medical doctors must be consulted, majority of them are not in support of that.
