Let's hope that this isn't the "Fate of the Furious"

I’ve got this really bad habit…okay, I’ve got quite a few bad habits, but this one comes out in a big way after watching certain movies.

If it was a martial arts film, I feel like I have kung-fu skills. If it was a romantic comedy, I feel like I’m the most charming man in the room.

The feeling is at it’s worse if the movie can make the hairs on my arm stand up with excitement or is so thriller that my breath becomes shallow and quick.

So you can imagine the danger that comes with watching a Fast and the Furious film. The movie snob in me has desperately tried not to have a good time watching most of the movies in the series, but I had and I was now looking forward to the 8th one.

Needless to say, I was worried about what state my car would be in after driving home post the movie, and just how many road laws I was going to be tempted to break.

I didn’t have to be concerned.

In all honesty, there is something…lacking…in this movie – and I’ve been racking my brain trying to think what it is.

Is it plot? Well…that can’t be it, since the previous films didn’t have much of that to begin with.

How about the action scenes? If you’ve scene the trailer you’ll know that this one is chock full of properly impressive action. I mean, they get chased by a friggin’ submarine.

What about the acting? Really? You’re asking about the acting in a Fast and the Furious movie?

That being said, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren do make some great additions to a cast that is generally lacking in award-winning acting skills.

I guess the thing is truly lacking in Fate of the Furious is soul. It might have something to do with obvious hole left behind by the passing of Paul Walker during the shooting of the last movie.

Look, to be perfectly frank, Fate of the Furious is the by the numbers Fast flick. It ticks all the boxes that a fan might want, ie. Fast cars, scantily-clad ladies, big fight scenes and car crashes. Lots of car crashes.

Also, there’s this line from The Rock (said while flexing unnecessarily):

“I’m going to beat you like a Cherokee drum”.

Hey, that’s good enough for me.
