Sold out bird watchers cruise sets sail on Monday

The MSC Sinfonia takes off along the continental shelf from Cape Town on Monday for the Flock at Sea cruise.

The 5 day, 4 night cruise will host over 2000 birders for seabird spotting.

BirdLife South Africa has organised top seabird guides on deck, a variety of onboard lectures and talks by leading seabird experts.

The organisation’s 88th AGM will also be held on board.

CEO Mark Anderson says this trip is particularly special.

This is a unique voyage because we did this four years ago and we went up to Walvis bay and back… this time we are heading south east of Cape Town for several hundred kilometers to the end of the continental shelf which is one of the richest places in the world for sea birding.

Mark Anderson, CEO of BirdLife South Africa

We think this is something of a record, we are battling to get any kind of statistics but this could be the most birders ever on a ship in the history of bird watching in the world.

Mark Anderson, CEO of BirdLife South Africa

Anderson says a large amount of the money raised will go directly into seabird conservation.
