Sihle Hlope on how she is using TV & Film to conscientise viewers

Chairperson of the Writers' Guild Sihle Hlope is an award-winning writer and director, as well as the founder of Passion Seed Communications.

Hlophe has worked as a scriptwriter on popular TV shows such as Scandal on eTV, Dreamworld on SABC 1, _Mutual Friends _on SABC 1 and _Vuka Mawulele _on Mzansi Magic.

She speaks to Gugulethu Mhlungu about the success around the crowdfunded film, Nomfundo, which has been selected for the Helsinki International Film Festival.

I have always known that I am a socially conscious type of film maker. I have always known that I want to subvert certain conventions in cinema and film. I want to experiment, I want to play.

Sihle Hlope, Director

She says her aim is to use entertainment to relay important messages and conscientise viewers.

The amazing thing about film, having that stage to experiment, what is great about TV is being able to get a message to millions of people and being able to conscientise them in ways that cinema cant.

Sihle Hlope, Director

I remember Mfundi Vundla said a lot of black South Africans work so hard and cant go on holiday. So for him, when he gives them Generations its like giving them theater in their homes.

Sihle Hlope, Director

Hlope shares what she believe are still existing challenges and her hopes for the industry.

In TV, I think great strides are being made... but I am still worried about the lack of minority groups being represented in a lot of the mainstream programs, in terms of language, people with disabilities.

Sihle Hlope, Director

In cinema we are still waiting on the first feature film that is directed by a black woman that will be theatrically released, but I am happy that there are more South African films on our screens.
