No jobs for medical interns as health dept funds dry up - Sama

Cape Talk's John Maytham has received numerous emails from medical interns who have not been placed in a community service medical post.

South Africa Medical Association vice-chairperson Mark Sonderup says the issue arose near the end of 2016 around the placement of both interns and community service medical officers. Sonderup says there have been some placements over time.

The last list I'd seen, about three weeks ago, there are about 53 people in both categories that have yet to be placed. There is a sizable chunk of those people that are foreign nationals that have trained in South Africa.

And as the minister and policy of the department dictates, they place South African citizens first, then residents, then what remains will go to people who are third up on the list which are foreign nationals.

Sonderup says applications will open on Friday for midyear placements. The appointments for 2017 will open up a month later, in May. He says unfortunately there are no jobs available in the Western Cape.

When you move across the rest of the country John, and this is by their own admission, the departments has run out of money.

Mark Sonderup, South Africa Medical Association, vice-chairperson

The posts exists on the system but they have to be funded and that's the problem. We're in trouble John.

Sonderup says Kwazulu Natal has admitted that it is out of funds. Sonderup adds that eyes will now be on the finance minister for possible assistance.
