Judge Desai visits van Breda home on day 2 of triple murder trial

In the Western Cape High Court on Monday, murder accused Henri van Breda pleaded not guilty to allegedly murdering his parents and brother in January 2015.

On Tuesday morning the court visited the van Breda home in De Zalze, outside Stellenbosch, where the fatal incident happened.

Judge Siraj Desai arrived at the De Zalze estate shortly before ten. He spent just under two hours at the De Zalze property.

There was a huge media contingency here today, with foreign press as well. We were stopped from entering the premises by the security. And then Judge Desai allowed us in.

EWN reporter Giovanna Gerbi says the journalists covering the trial were only allowed outside the house. Judge Desai inspected the parameters of the house, checking if it is possible that an intruder may have gained entry into the house as Henri van Breda claimed in his plea explanation.

Judge Desai wanted to understand the whole layout of the house.

Gerbi describes how van Breda spoke about a laughing intruder.

He said he was in the bathroom at the time when he saw his brother being attacked through the bathroom door. It was balaclava clad man. He mentioned in his explanation that he heard another person downstairs speaking loudly in Afrikaans.

The bizarre thing that emerged in his plea explanation, that he said this intruder was laughing all the time when he allegedly murdered his father, Martin. That's his version of events that emerged in court yesterday.

Gerbi says this is van Breda's version of events as told in court on Monday afternoon.
