Have you given consent to receive marketing phone texts without knowing?

Irritated by funeral, household, and car insurance pitches that are sent to your phone without consent?

Vice-chair and head of the legal portfolio at WASPA (Wireless Application Service Providers Association), Anthony Ekerold, says people sometimes give consent without knowing.

He says some of the online forms have a section where they ask for consent to give your information to third parties for marketing purposes and people tick it without being aware.

You need to be very careful when opening online forms that you are not giving consent to marketers.

Anthony Ekerold, Vice-chair and head of the legal portfolio at WASPA

Ekerold addressed issues around who is liable for the opt out costs saying that its a transmission cost which the marketing firm does not benefit from. The money simply goes to the network provider for transmitting the message.

That is the only cost entitled to be charged, nobody profits from that sms. And if they are charging anything above the sms standard rate, they are committing a crime.
