Striking SAA cabin crew demand to speak with Dudu Myeni

A strike by South African Airways cabin crew has led to delays and cancellations on some their flights.

Deputy president of the SA Cabin Crew Association, Christopher Shabangu, says they are demanding a $170 (R2 222) a day meal allowance when travelling overseas.

The cabin crew is currently being given $131 (R1 712.85) which he says has remained the same for the past 6 years.

Shabangu said they want to be on a par with colleagues at fellow airlines.

We have said to SAA that we are willing that you pair us with our colleagues so that the company doesn't bleed but the company said no - so we were left with no choice but to go on strike.

Christopher Shabangu, Deputy president of the SA Cabin Crew Association

Shabangu says that they've asked to meet with SAA Chairperson Dudu Myeni to help deal with the situation. He says they've also written to Pravin Gordhan when he was still minister of finance to intervene in the matter.
