'Mantashe isn't backing down on the reshuffle and neither is Zuma'

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe has asked the President's lawyers to answer why they filed court documents claiming he and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa apologised for publicly criticising the Cabinet reshuffle.

The legal team must actually answer.

Midday Report host Stephen Grootes says Mantashe was justified to deny the claims as he did not apologise to President Jacob Zuma.

Grootes explains that people may have misunderstood the context in which Mantashe spoke at the party's national working committee (NWC) briefing three weeks ago.

Mantashe had told 702 that ANC’s leadership was not consulted in the reshuffle, then later spoke on behalf of the ANC's NWC, backing President Jacob Zuma.

He did not apologise at all. He said all six leaders felt it was wrong for their dissonance to be expressed publicly.

According to Grootes, many people felt Mantashe had "given in", because of the failed expectation that the NWC would call to vote Zuma out.

If you go through the statement of the NWC, it is the strongest criticism of Zuma that the NWC has ever made.
