Cabin crew stuck with same meal allowance from 2011, says ex flight attendant

It is simply not true that cabin crew get breakfasts when they are overseas.

Cindy, caller

She explains that it is not standard policy for hotels to provide breakfasts for cabin crew, while some senior members may be fortunate to receive a generous gesture.

Employees affiliated to the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) are demanding a $170 (R2,222.80) a day meal allowance when travelling overseas.

Their meal allowance hasn't been increased since 2011, and food has gone up everywhere.

Cindy, caller

In New York, $170 is not that much to eat on, believe me.

Cindy, caller

I think the cabin crew are being treated really unfairly on this.... They deal with a lot of stress. People should look on the other side as well.

Cindy, caller

They currently receive $131 (R1,712.85) which they say has not been increased in the last six years.

SAA has cancelled 32 flights so far, with 28 domestic, three regional and one international flight cancelled.

Take a listen to her explain the strenuous conditions under which cabin crew work:
