Gift Ngoepe has become both the first South African and African-born player in Major League Baseball history.

Ngoepe says his late mother, who was a domestic worker, played a crucial role in attaining his goals.

I was playing all those years before because I promised I would do something big for her.

The 27 year old made his MLB debut last week Wednesday, getting a single in his first at-hat for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He has described the event as an overwhelming feeling.

Ngoepe signed with the Pirates in 2008 and has established himself as a solid-fielding prospect who has struggled at the plate.

According to the New York Times, the sportsman is considered the best defensive prospect in the organisation.

I have been through a lot in this game, baseball is a very mental game and if you are not strong mentally its going to tear you apart.
