'Economic participation the only way to emancipate SA'

What does economic freedom in our lifetime actually mean, beyond the political jargon?

Economist Xhanti Payi says it requires the participation of all South Africans in the economy.

Payi explains that economic exclusion continues as 20 million South Africans are not in formal economic activity.

The enduring legacy of apartheid is exclusion.

Xhanti Payi, economist

We've wasted a lot of time on aggregates.

Xhanti Payi, economist

We have not focused on the individual.... Our job is to make sure every single South African is at work.

Xhanti Payi, economist

We are a democracy and must ensure that every single individual participates - that's the only way we can [be] emancipated and grow the economy.

Xhanti Payi, economist

He says that there needs to be more deliberate dialogue on how to reverse the economic exclusions of apartheid.

How do we get people at work, contributing to knowledge and get black people ownership? We are not discussing those things.

Xhanti Payi, economist

He unpacked popular catch phrases such as "economic freedom in our lifetime" and "radical economic transformation" and their implications.
