'Coup plotter' story doesn't seem credible, says defence analyst

Defense analyst Helmoed Heitman says the man alleged to have orchestrated an assassination plot, to kill 19 individuals linked to state capture claims, does not seem credible.

The alleged mastermind in the case, identified as Elvis Ramosebudi, made his first appearance in the Johannesburg magistrates court.

He's been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Heitman says he's more skeptical about the suspect than the Hawks investigation.

I'm reluctant to say that the Hawks are spinning a story, but the whole thing sounds very non-credible.

He says that he would have avoided the major media attention generated by a press statement from the Hawks.

If I were an intelligence officer, I would want to dig a lot deeper.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it won't reveal the names of those identified as targets in an alleged assassination plot.

The list includes Cabinet members and members of the Gupta family.
