New details emerge on how Zuma benefited from the arms deal

According to a report by the Sunday Times, President Jacob Zuma allegedly tried to silence a close confidant who had "intimate knowledge" about how the president benefited from the arms deal.

According to Sunday Times reporter Mzilikazi WA Afrika, a Pretoria-based lawyer, Ajay Sooklal, was asked by President Zuma not to testify at the Seriti commission after he allegedly witnessed payments made to Zuma by a French company, Thales.

Sooklal claims that Zuma lost his luggage on his trip to Paris and Thales paid for his 5-star accommodation, bought him a new wardrobe and gave him money in cash.

According to witnesses he bought a whole lot of stuff, including designer jackets, four pairs of trousers, two pairs of shoes, shirts and socks...

Wa Afrika says Sooklal has filed an affidavit in support of a high court application by Corruption Watch and the Right2Know Campaign, which are challenging the findings of the Seriti commission of inquiry into the arms deal.

These activities took place in October 2007, as stated in Sooklal's affidavit, says Wa Afrika.
