Here's what students are spending their money on

CEO at Student Village, Ronen Aires, shares with CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies some of the trends on campuses and how students spend their money and what they spend their money on.

Student Village has done an in-depth research on students spending patterns as part of their 2017 Student Spend survey.

Aires says students spend a bulk of their money on buying cellphones and data. There are no exact figures on how much is being spent on data because they buy as they go spending R5 - R20 a day.

Data has become the new oxygen in their world...

Ronen Aires, CEO at Student Village

Aires says although these young people spend more time online, they still prefer walking into a store to do their shopping. He says they maintain their Instagram lifestyle by taking pictures in fitting rooms and posting them online.

He says they are also big on specials because they are online all the time. They target three for one specials and share amongst themselves in order to save money.

What's interesting is that if you look at an average South African versus students, we find students spend more.
