"We are not willing to listen to each other to learn and reflect"

Ralph Mathekga, Independent political analyst and columnist and author of the book When Zuma Goes, has written a thought piece interrogating the state of debate in South Africa. Mathekga writes in his piece that decent debate is hard to find in South Africa these days.

I think our public space is fraught with suspicion and mistrust.

Mathekga says he feels people are dismissed on the basis of being affiliated with the Guptas or white monopoly capital. Even women are often dismissed and further labeled as being bitter, he adds.

He says instead of an individual being engaged on the points they are raising, they will instead be classified into a particular category.

If you carefully observe our mode of exchange it is that in which we are not willing to listen to each other to learn and reflect.

Ralph Mathekga, Independent political analyst and author

The quality of our debates is poor.

Ralph Mathekga, Independent political analyst and author

Mathekga says a young democracy such as South Africa should be open to having debates on everything. Having Professor, Chris Malikane, economic advisor to finance minister, being reduced to a Gupta affiliate is offensive.

I disagree with a lot of what he has to say but I have got a lot of respect for him.

Ralph Mathekga, Independent political analyst and author
