A steep price tag may not always constitute a good bed

Sleep Researcher at UCT, Rob Henst, says the time and energy spent looking for a car equals time and energy spent looking for a bed.

Its a personal thing - what another person likes their car to be will not be what you like your car be like.

The best way to find a mattress is to try it out.

Rob Henst, Sleep Researcher at UCT

Henst says the most important thing is that your spine is straight when lying on a bed and the way to do it is to go to the bed shop and lie on their beds for 10 - 15 minutes before buying.

In terms of how much one should spend on a bed, he says it is important that you buy a bed you can afford as long as it doesn't give you a backache.

Henst refers to an unpublished survey where the researcher tried to measure the difference in brain activity when sleeping on a normal mattress, expensive mattress or concrete floor. It was found that there is no difference and he claims that resulted in the study never being published because the expensive mattress manufacturer didn't find it beneficial.

The people that slept on a super expensive mattress slept just as well as those who slept on a normal mattress and they also slept just as well as those who slept on a concrete floor.
