'Joberg2C mountain bike race an opportunity to think deeply about our country'

Social justice advocate Mark Heywood recently completed the Joberg2C mountain bike race to raise money for Section 27.

Heywood reflected on the grueling nine day race and says it may be one of the most exciting experiences of his life.

It was very tough. Over 100 kilometres a day, up and down mountains, on dirt paths and along river sides.

It was a wonderful experience and opportunity to see South Africa and a wonderful opportunity to think deeply about our country.

There were long moments of pain, introspection, silence and questioning.

I learnt about the beauty of our country, which I knew about already - but I saw it every second of the day.

There's a whole book to be written just about the stories of the people who do this race.

Heywood bonded with a group of other advocates and activists riding for different causes, including Letshego Zulu.

He described the "grind" involved with each day and what he says he the learnt most from the challenge.
