Running records pre-2005 may be wiped out

The European Athletics Council held a meeting over the weekend and came up with a radical proposal, which seeks to have new standards for recognising records.

The proposed rules and standards are meant to ensure that record holding performances are not marred by doping. This, however, they may nullify many previous world records prior to 2005.

Mike Finch, Editor, Runner’s World says the news have brought an outcry from many athletes.

The clean athletes are being punished along with the so-called unclean athletes.

Finch says athletics globally is struggling as a sport with track and field numbers diminishing drastically. He adds that the sport is in crisis because it has lost credibility. Finch says this could potentially get people to watch athletics again.
